How to Organize Under-Sink Storage Without Wasting Space
Under-sink cupboards are awkward by design, but a few smart storage choices can turn them into one of the most useful spaces in the kitchen. These ideas will help you work around pipes, reduce clutter and keep everyday essentials easy to reach.

1. Work Around the Plumbing, Not Against It
Start by accepting that the pipes are staying put. Instead of fighting them, choose narrow bins, tiered shelves or U-shaped organizers that fit around the plumbing without blocking it. Keep taller items like sprays and bottles toward the sides, leaving the center clear so you can still access valves if needed. This approach keeps everything visible and reachable while avoiding the frustration of knocking into pipes every time you grab a cleaner.
2. Use Pull-Out Drawers and Baskets
The hardest part of under-sink storage is reaching the back. Pull-out drawers, caddies or baskets solve this by bringing everything to you. Look for low-profile units that glide smoothly and fit around the plumbing. Store heavier items, like cleaning sprays or extra sponges, in these pull-outs so you’re not digging or bending awkwardly. When you can slide the whole bin out in one motion, it’s easier to see what you have and avoid buying duplicates.
3. Take Advantage of Vertical Space
Most under-sink cupboards have a lot of unused height. Add stackable bins, risers or small shelves to create layers so items aren’t piled on top of each other. Place everyday essentials on the lower level and backups or refills above. Just be sure nothing is stacked so high that it brushes against the pipes or blocks the cabinet door. Thoughtful vertical storage keeps the space feeling open while still giving everything a clear spot to live.
4. Group Cleaning Products by Purpose
Instead of lining up bottles in a row, group products by how you use them: kitchen surfaces, dishes, floors, or bathroom cleaners that you store here as overflow. Give each category its own bin or tray so you can grab exactly what you need in one move. This also makes it easier to see when you’re running low on something. When every product has a defined “zone,” the cupboard feels calmer and you’re less likely to misplace a favorite cleaner.
5. Use Clear Containers for Smaller Items
Sponges, brushes, dishwasher tabs and rubber gloves can quickly scatter and disappear into corners. Clear bins or jars keep these smaller items contained while still visible at a glance. Choose containers with straight sides so they sit neatly together and don’t waste space. Label them if you share the kitchen with others, or simply group like with like. When every small item has a home, the cupboard feels less chaotic and stays organized with minimal effort.
6. Put the Cabinet Doors to Work
The inside of the cabinet doors is valuable real estate. Add slim hooks, adhesive pockets or shallow racks to hold items like gloves, cloths, scrub brushes or extra sponges. Keep these lighter, frequently used pieces on the doors so they’re easy to grab without digging into the main storage area. Just make sure anything you hang is low-profile enough that it doesn’t bump into the items inside when the doors close.
7. Keep Only Everyday Essentials Under the Sink
Under-sink space works best when it’s reserved for what you reach for often. Relocate rarely used products, bulk refills or heavy tools to a utility cupboard or laundry area. Aim to keep just one or two backups of your most-used items here, not full stockpiles. With fewer things competing for space, it’s easier to keep the area tidy, spot leaks early and quickly grab what you need in the middle of a busy day.
